Adventure through Acts
The book of Acts is a record of survival through adversity, triumph against all odds, and victory snatched from the jaws of defeat. It is the story of a group of ordinary people who turned the tide of history through the power of their extraordinary God.
It tells of the spread of the good news about Jesus as it spread out from Jerusalem on the lips the Apostles, empowered by the Holy Spirit. It’s a book full of action and wonder; the amazing account of God’s empowering of a small group of people to spread the message that has now reached out to every corner of the globe.
We invite you to Adventure through Acts with us! Over 9 weeks, we’ll read bite-sized chunks of Acts, as together we marvel at what God did through his faithful followers 2000 years ago – and as we pray that God would help us, too, to reach further with the good news of Jesus.
Start the adventure …
• Before you read each section, pray. Ask the Lord to change, encourage and equip you to serve him today
• Read the short passage each day from Monday to Saturday, starting on May 20th. The passages are listed below.
• If you prefer, listen to the passage instead (read by David ‘Poirot’ Suchet or in this dramatised version).
• Share questions, insights and encouragements with others in your small group, prayer triplet, or on the Adventure through Acts whatsapp chat.
Delve deeper …
• You might find it helpful to get a flavour of the book as a whole by reading or listening to all of it in one go.
• Copies of Phil Moore’s book “Straight to the heart of Acts” are available for £8 from the church building or office, or you can buy the e-book online
• Other resources are available here
• As you progress through Acts, you will see the names of towns mentioned later in the New Testament in Paul’s letters: Corinth, Ephesus, Philippi, etc.. You might find it helpful in building up the big picture, to cross refer to these other epistles.
• Look out for the times the first Christians got things wrong, just as we do; the early church was far from perfect, just like the church today!
Remember: the same powerful gospel message is available to us today and the same Holy Spirit who empowered those first Christians fills us and equips us to do his works here and now. So as you read or listen to each passage, start with a prayer like this:
Heavenly Father, as I read these verses, open my ears to hear your voice. By the power of your Spirit, change, encourage and equip me to serve you today. And help us, as a church, to reach further with the good news of Jesus, just as those first Christians did. Amen
