Environment
As Christians, we believe that God's world is precious. He made it, sustains it, has redeemed it and will one day renew it. He has given us the responsibility to take care of it.
Over the last two years we have looked at all aspects of our church life and are actively working towards being much more environmentally friendly both as individuals and as a church community. So, for example, we have been reducing our use of disposable items, increasing recycling, encouraging vegetable growing, and have put nest boxes and a bug church in the church grounds. Members of the church have been actively looking after the Colebrook Green, gardening in St James Park, litter picking around Shirley, and supporting environmental charities both in the UK and overseas. This effort was recognised by the church being awarded an Eco Church Bronze Award in April 2020.
If you wish to be more involved, the following groups are focussing on particular areas of looking after our world:
The Colebrook Green cell are working with the City Council to improve the green space between St James' by the Park and the Parish Hall.
The community litter-picking group meet on one Saturday morning each month to pick up litter around the local area.
The eco-church group is challenging the church to be more environmentally aware and take positive action for our planet. As part of our effort to do this we offset our carbon footprint via our mission partners in Uganda. You can do the same, too, for your household carbon footprint - read more here.
In addition, we support A Rocha, who equip Christians and churches to be good stewards of the environment
