57 men from Shirley died in the Great War (1914-1918).
On Remembrance Sunday 2018, we paid tribute to them - you can watch the service here. (The filming for livestream was done by the Solent University Live Events Society and kindly funded by the Shirley Traders Association.)

A team of volunteers researched the biographies of the 57 men who died. You can download a copy of their stories here, or ask our office for a printed copy. Here's a map showing roughly where some of the men lived.
As part of our commemorations, we have raised money to repair the Shirley War Memorial outside our church. It needed cleaning, underpinning and some replacement lettering (photos of before and after are shown below). Thank you to everyone who contributed money towards it, and to Allstone Stonemasons for doing the work at a heavily discounted price.
